Review of Book
Shen approaches the difficult subject of homosexuality with wisdom and experience. Having served as a professional counsellor in four different Asian nations, he has ministered insight and strength to many people, and thought carefully about their experiences in the process. His new book The Un-affirmed Core also gives a fresh, careful, and deeply compassionate look at the great diversity and commonalities among people with same sex attraction who grew up in traditional societies. The case-studies that he scatters throughout are a special highlight. This book's assortment of short stories based on real lives will offer a wealth of new understanding. Another special strength of the book is the way it makes rich connections between a traditional sexual ethic and modern psychology, avoiding easy errors or simplifications. Shen's chapter on how a person with homosexuality becomes aware of his or her condition over time is particularly valuable; his comments on the intersex condition...
…on the ways family and culture can affect sexual development, on the value of leaders with same sex attraction, and on the group psychologies involved in sexual abuse, are all also special merits. This new book should be a precious source of enlightenment and insight for people in conservative-religious communities who are ready to begin thinking about people with same sex attraction in a serious way.
